Love, Hate, iPod – Vol. 3

Well I’m back from a rather lengthy hiatus. An important portion of which was spent in sunny Florida. Let me tell you, there isn’t a much better way to escape the doldrums of the Midwest then to a condo on the ocean. Unfortunately I did have to leave, but I did have another moment in which my love/hate relationship with my iPod became one sided battle.

Exhibit A

If you don’t already know, I love vinyl. Not to be a hipster or to be better than anyone else, well maybe just a little, but mainly because I just love the sound quality. With this love of vinyl comes the occasional resentment of my iPod. Sure, I have one, but why would I listen to something compressed as flat as a digital pancake and with a dynamic range the width of my pinky when I can experience the pure warm bliss of a true analog copy on wax.

I hate to say it, but this idealist view was torn away before my very eyes as I lay on the beach, earbuds in, sun crashing down, waves rippling, and nothing but sand beneath me. I sat there and wondered, could my record player do this for me? As much as I wanted it to believe it could happen, I just don’t think it could be possible. Now I’m back at home and sure, my ears are appreciating it, but the view from the couch just doesn’t make it the same.
